Equal Opportunity Entrapment?

In my previous post I documented that neither the police nor the FBI have been defunded, and promised to tell you which government service has really been cut severely. Meanwhile I received more information about the FBI’s tactics. I’d written about the agency entrapping a young Muslim in a bomb plot. In response, a former member of the Jewish Defense League (JDL) forwarded articles to me about an FBI informant doing the same to two members of that organization, Irv Rubin and Earl Krugel. The informant apparently involved them in a conspiracy to blow up a mosque near Los Angeles and the office of Rep. Darrell Issa, a descendant of Lebanese Christian immigrants. The two were arrested in 2001.

Rubin supposedly committed suicide while in detention, before a trial could take place. The official account was that he “slit his throat with a jail-issued safety razor…and then jumped or fell over a railing and plummeted some 18 feet to the concrete floor below.” His wife said he’d been in good spirits when she visited him the day before, and demanded an investigation. As far as I know, that investigation never happened.

Krugel pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years. In 2005, just days after being sent to a federal penitentiary, he was murdered by another prisoner. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, “Given Krugel’s role in the JDL, it would be extraordinary if prison officials failed to segregate him from the rest of the prison population.”

(Note that the FBI has gone after many different groups–Muslims, Black Panthers, peace activists, etc.–but, interestingly enough, they haven’t targeted white supremacists.)

I don’t have to be in agreement with the politics of any organizations they target to oppose the FBI’s tactics. Do they expect me to be comforted by their concern for my safety? When they use my tax dollars to seduce people into planning terrorist attacks, I’m terrified—and angry.

In the next few days you’ll get the scoop on who has really been defunded. That’s a promise!
